Environmental Scientist
Summary/Objective
Environmental Scientist: non- entry level, with 3 to 5 years of experience (preferred).
Competencies
Marathon seeks a professional that can assist with all aspects of its environmental services including: Phase I Environmental Site Assessments; client and subcontractor coordination; air, soil and groundwater sampling; geographic information system (GIS) mapping; data management; and report preparation. The Environmental Scientist is expected to work on task assignments independently and as a member of a team.
In addition to the above tasks, the Environmental Scientist needs to be competent in the following areas: strong written and verbal communication; knowledge of MS office suite of programs; basic knowledge of GPS/GIS, AutoCAD is a plus; basic knowledge of New Jersey rules & regulations and NJDEP technical guidance documents; ability to calibrate and use various field sampling instruments; strong organizational skills; and attention to detail/thoroughness. This position has limited supervisory responsibility.
Work Environment
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee must be able to work at various job sites, located indoors and outdoors, including oil refineries, active gas stations, abandoned warehouses, industrial manufacturing facilities, excavation sites, etc. Safety equipment will be provided as needed for each site, which may include respirators. This role may also be subjected to varying, and sometimes extreme, hot and cold temperatures due to changes in outdoor weather. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The noise level in the environment is moderate but may be high when at job sites.
This is a full-time position and typical work hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. One hour of unpaid lunch is included and the employee must work a minimum of 40 hours per week to maintain full-time status. Some flexibility in hours is allowed but the employee must be available during the “core” work day; noting that the hours chosen must be consistent.
No extended travel is expected for this position. However, daily travel in the Tri-State area is expected and is reimbursed at the current IRS rate per mile. When available, Marathon’s field truck can be used.
Required Training, Education and Licensure
- 40 Hour OSHA HAZWOPER
- Bachelor’s degree from college or university in environmental engineering, science or geology.
- Master’s degree equates to three years experience.
- No professional licensure required at this level.

Location
Marathon’s office are located in Swedeboro, New Jersey; and the employee will be expected to report to the office every day during the Marathon’s standard new hire probationary period. After this period, specifics of the hybrid schedule will be determined and offered to the employee should they choose to accept the work-from-home conditions.
Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $34.86 to $40.00/Hr The employee will be paid hourly, including overtime as straight time.
