UNDERGROUND STORAGE TANK CORRECTIVE ACTION
Pottstown, Pennsylvania
Marathon was contracted by Garden State Fuels to conduct groundwater sampling and analysis for compliance with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) Corrective Action Process. Recalcitrant concentrations of gasoline compounds in groundwater were mitigated with an Interim Remedial Action involving the design and installation of a treatment system to intercept and treat groundwater with a chemical oxidant to accelerate the clean-up of the groundwater near the suspected source. When business conditions resulted in the closure of the UST system, four (4) underground storage tanks were removed including a previously unknown leaking UST which was determined to be the original source of the groundwater contamination.
In addition to the removal and disposal of contaminated soils as an Interim Remedial Action (IRA), an In-Situ Chemical Oxidant (ISCO) was added to the excavation to further reduce the mass of contaminates and accelerate the site clean-up. Under the PADEP’s corrective action process, additional quarterly groundwater monitoring will be required; however, the IRA and ISCO remedial actions are expected to quickly to remediate the site and bring closure to the case.
