PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT/SITE INVESTIGATION/REMEDIAL INVESTIGATION
FREEHOLD RACETRACK
Freehold, Ocean County, New Jersey
Marathon was retained by Greenwood Gaming to complete a preliminary assessment/site investigation (“PA/SI”) and a remedial investigation (“RI”). The PA/SI was required to identify sources of chlorinated hydrocarbon contamination detected in groundwater on the Subject Property. Through Marathon’s research and completion of the PA, the potential source of contamination was identified as a former garage building from the 1950s/1960’s that was used for equipment repair. The area of concern was confirmed as a source of contamination through the SI of groundwater. A RI of this area of concern is ongoing.
A Separate RI was performed by Marathon to delineate the extents of petroleum impacted soil and groundwater associated with former underground storage tanks (“USTs”) removed from the property in the late 1990’s. The NJDEP had issued a notice of deficiency to address several technical and administrative deficiencies associated with previous submissions by other consultants performing work prior to Greenwood Gaming’s purchase of the racetrack. Marathon addressed the deficiencies to the satisfaction of the NJDEP. Marathon completed the delineation of petroleum impacted soil and groundwater; completed a baseline ecological evaluation and receptor evaluation that confirmed that there was no pathway to sensitive ecological areas; vapor intrusion issues or potential for potable wells to be impacted.
Marathon has been monitoring groundwater and is developing a remedial action workplan to complete the remediation of petroleum impacted soil and groundwater. The work is being completed by a licensed site remediation professional pursuant to the NJDEP’s Site Remediation Reform Act.
